Project: Spring Renewal
March 12, 2010

As spring approaches, many homeowners grow eager to start remodeling projects to update and refresh their surroundings. Before getting started its a good idea to lay out a workable plan. Here are some tips for planning a successful remodel.

1. Compile a list of home remodeling ideas and draft a budget for the work.

You likely have some projects in mind. You may just want to spruce things up with new accessories or furnishings, or you may have more extensive projects in mind such as modernizing the bathroom, renovating the kitchen, replacing windows or repairing the roof. For the larger projects you may want to enlist the services of a professional remodeler. A professional can help you identify the costs and can suggest budget wise options.

2. Look for a professional

Start by searching NAHB’s Directory of Professional Remodelers at www.nahb.org/remodel. You’ll get a list of nearby remodelers to contact. Ask friends and neighbors for names of qualified remodelers. Conduct some background research by checking with the Better Business Bureau, talking to their references and asking if they are a trade association member (such as NAHB Remodelers). Remodelers with these qualities tend to be more reliable, better educated and more likely to stay on top of construction and design trends. Agree on a contract. You’ll want to check the remodelers’ insurance coverage, ask about any warranties on their work, know who is responsible for obtaining any building permits and understand the process for making any change orders after the contract is signed.

3. Prioritize your list

Maybe your budget will not allow for that major renovations. That does not mean you can’t spruce up your surroundings and still stay within your budget. Replacing outdated and tattered furnishings or just a simple update on accessories and wall decor can create the fresh new look you need.

Creating an outdoor living space is at the top of the list for many homeowners. Check out our previous blog for more outdoor ideas http://www.islandhomefurniture.com/blog/2007/09/26/its-in-to-be-out/.

4. Get started

Purchasing your products online allows you to shop at your convenience and you have a wider variety of products to chose from. With many of our stores cutting back on inventory, it is not unusual that what you want will have to be ordered anyway. Some things may be hard to find, so contact the online store directly. Many times those specialty products are available through a trusted online store but are not displayed on the website. Good luck and remember Island Home Furniture & Decor is here to provide  you with natural and eco-friendly alternatives for “feathering your nest” this spring.
