Go Green on Earth Day

April 22nd is Earth Day. The first annual Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, and was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson to be a day for all communities around the world to renew their commitment to making the world a cleaner, safer and healthier place for everyone.

Following the northern hemisphere’s rejuvenating Spring equinox, this is the perfect moment to embrace your responsibility to your community — and planet! — by getting involved in making this world a better place for years to come.

So how can you make a difference?

It’s not so easy, it might take some effort. Being an environmentalist today calls for a whole new level of green thinking. From what you choose at the grocery store and how you commute to and from work every day to how you decorate and furnish your home.

Some people obsess over furniture and others hardly even notice its there. Either way, making earth friendly choices in furnishing your home or office can make a big difference in your impact on the planet and your health. The movement toward sustainable furniture has attracted a large number of designers. Padma’s Plantation is one of the leaders in the industry and is a founding member of the Sustainable Furniture Council.

One of the most important things but often overlooked in green products is durability. This definitely applies to furniture. If something is tough and can be readily repaired this lessens the chance it will end up in a landfill and could save you money even if the initial purchase is more expensive. Durable goods that last a long time can pass from person to person. So if you tire of that kitchen table, it will appeal to someone else if it remains in good condition rather than one that has a broken leg and is unfixable.A little extra time and money is well spent not just for you and your pocket book but also for our “mother earth.”
