Baby Boomers - Generation X - Generation Y
What are the lifestyles of each of these groups? What furnishings are they looking for? Each of the three generations, dominant in the marketplace, differ in their personal and aesthetic values. Their needs are shaped by their experiences, what they “do” with their homes and the media that has fashioned their tastes. How well do you understand what inspires each of these groups and what group do fit into?
The Baby Boomers

Defining Events: Vietnam War, assassination of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy
What do they want?
Baby Boomers think of their homes as palaces. They want to leave their guests with a good
impression. Comfort is very important to them. Boomers seek home furnishings that help create a home that is restful and relaxing. Boomers are looking for low maintenance furnishings that don’t require hours of cleaning and dusting. As this group moves toward retirement, they are becoming owners of vacation and second homes. Boomers have a tendency to think younger than they are, so design colors will be bright, active and youthful. Pieces such as lounging sectionals, overstuffed, comfortable chairs, large beds with luxurious mattresses and casual dining sets fill the rooms of the Baby Boomer home.
Generation X’ers
Who are they?

Population: 49.1 million
Characteristics: cynical, skeptical, individualistic, self-reliant, practical, close to friends
Favorite TV Shows: “Friends”, “Seinfeld”
Defining Events: Ronald Reagan presidency, Watergate, AIDS outbreak
What do they want?
Baby Boomers are demanding the most remodeling in their homes. However, Generation X is close behind. Many
Generation X’ers are starting families, so their needs are durable fabrics, leather, distressed finishes and easy-to-maintain furnishings. Generation X spends a lot of time and money entertaining their friends. They value their friends as much as their family and their homes. This generation expects high quality and great styling. A home filled with furnishings that are comfortable and livable attract Generation X.
Generation Y
Who are they?

Population: 73.5 million
Characteristics: Technological savvy, close to parents, multi-task, culturally aware, status-driven, goal oriented, positive
Favorite TV Shows: “The Simpsons”, “American Idol”
Defining Events: Sept. 11, Iraq War, Hurricane Katrina
What do they want?
Generation Y believes they can make a difference. They are environmentally conscious, so sustainable products will be a
big part of their purchases. Adding green accent pieces to their urban dwellings makes them feel as they are doing their part. The popularity of loft living speaks directly to this generation. They are looking for affordable furniture for their first apartments and homes. Pieces like sofas with raised legs and counter or bar height dining tables as well as products with added storage functions are a must. Generation Y is looking for furniture that appeals to their social lifestyle. They love to socialize and they want their home to show good at parties.
